A final Voiceoffootball
blog.
So, where to begin. Someone asked me after the announcement
about the site closing how I'd finish it. It's hard to
sum up two years work, and all the highs and lows that
have gone with it, but the most accurate description would
be that the site closes with many happy memories for me,
and I hope for everyone who's been involved either through
writing for us or reading our content.
When Voiceoffootball first started my high expectations
were tempered with the usual concerns you have about how
things will work out. As it transpired, I needn't have
worried. A deluge of applicants to Write On resulted in
the 23 permanent columnists the site closes with, plus
a few others along the way. This year alone you’ve
logged into the site in your hundreds of thousands every
month, and in the two years we’ve welcomed over a
million of you in all, whilst receiving more messages than
we could ever have counted.
We've featured some amazing organisations doing
excellent work, both charitable and otherwise, that I hope
has been
recognised more as a result of the coverage we've given
them.
Most of all, however, I feel I've made friends in this
job. Our columnists are, to a man and woman, every inch
the writers who've made Voiceoffootball special.
They've informed, amused, infuriated and occasionally baffled
you, our readership, and they are the reason that Voiceoffootball
has become so popular.
All in all, I’d say we go out on a high. Even as
I write your emails continue to arrive, and although it
is impossible to reply to you all individually, please
accept our thanks for your kindness and good wishes.
As much as I've loved this job, time has come to move
on, and for Voiceoffootball this is, to coin that famous
lyric, the final curtain. Don't be sad though, it has been
an amazing adventure. Football really is the greatest game
in the world, and its fans are the absolute best. Whatever
your footballing allegiances, good luck for the future.
Thank you... and goodbye x |
